WA Over 50's - 2011 Match Reports

WA vs SA - Friday, September 30, 2011

Our first game of the tournament was a disappointing 1-0 loss to SA
An early goal at the 10 minute mark put SA ahead which was a confidence boost for them.
WA responded strongly and despite a constant attack, positive and effective communication on the field, and a number of short corners, we were unable to score against a dogged and determined SA team.

Alison McVee was awarded best player for her strong game - in particular her tackling and attacking play in the first half.
Tracey Buswell received runner up for her efforts particularly in the second half. She was solid in defence over the whole game .
Virgin vet, Sue Wilson was unlucky not to scare off a shot in the circle over a scrimmage.

Coach Vicki Silich told us to use our centre half more and sharpen our passing so we will reflect on that and pull it together against NSW on Sunday.

Thanks to our loyal supporters.

Result: WA 0 - SA 1

WA vs NSW - Sunday, October 2, 2011

We approached this game with the knowledge that NSW would be tough and they had key play makers.
We countered by appointing taggers and this was successful.

After a strong start which had us in attack for the first 20 minutes including a number of short corners which unfortunately did not succeed, NSW slowly gained the upper hand and scored two goals off short corners leaving us 2-0 down at half time.

We started strongly again in the second half with a number of field shots which did not convert to goals and further short corners late in the game were also unsuccessful.

NSW again scored off a short corner despite two exceptional saves from Marie (Frenchy) Hadet.

The final crushing blow came from a base line attack 15 seconds before the end of the game.

The consensus from observers and the coach was that the score did not reflect the effort and pressure we put NSW under for the bulk of the game. We just need to find the back of the net.

Best player was awarded to Jayne Hatt for solid work as right inner.
Special mention for courageous play given personal tragedy was given to Tracey Hough.
All WA teams wore black arm bands to show their support and condolences for Tracey on the loss of her mother. We have her in our hearts as we play the rest of the week.

We thoroughly enjoyed the skit night with outstanding performances from all teams. No one will ever forget Jill Shehan as a bride in an aged care home with false eye, hair, teeth and leg or Dale Keeley serenading her new bride saying "I slept on the chair because there was more of you there'"

Our Captain, Deb Andrews and Vice Captain Gail Westlund have been rock solid players on and off the field and have the team motivated to give their all against Queensland today.

Report by Debbie Whiting.

Result: WA 0 - NSW 4

WA vs QLD - Monday, October 3, 2011

This game reflected a marked improvement in the performance of the WA team.
We constantly pressured the Queenslanders into making errors.
We had 3 short corners as did QLD. Neither side penetrated the defense.
Marie Hadet "Frenchie" saved 9 separate shots on goal and was singled out as a best player along with Captain, Deb Andrews, who was a stellar halfback, consistently breaking down the attack for seventy minutes.
Kim Chandler was also nominated as a best player for a solid performance as deep fullback. It was Kim's best game as she channelled the ball comfortably left or right and made many successful tackles.
New recruit to the team, Sheri Stokell made a valuable contribution as left half and centre half.
Super Coops, Alison Cooper, had her best game of the tournament at Centre Striker. She was relentless in attack and narrowly missed scoring.
Helen Gandy, made great use of the ball and strung together a number of valuable passages of play until sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Coach, Vicki Silich was very satisfied with the team performance and although we have completed 3 games without scoring a single goal, the momentum is building towards a win which we hope will be against the big bad Vics.

After a chicken and salad supper and a brief recap on the game, the team is salivating for a win.
Traditional rivalry between WA and Victoria should see the sparks fly tomorrow.
