WA Over 55's - 2006 Match Reports

WA vs QLD - Friday, July 21, 2006

Lucky last at 8.30pm at night – but still warm.
Those Queensland girls were fast and furious and the ball seemed to be constantly in our half.
We managed to hold them off in the first half and were doing the same in the second half until about 18 minutes to go … then the inevitable happened and they converted one of their many short corners.
We didn’t give up and came back strongly – even scoring a goal from Jane and Betty after a whistle. Shame that doesn’t count! But it ended up with a 0-1 loss. Bring on tomorrow!

Result: WA 0 - QLD 1

WA vs NT - Saturday, July 22, 2006

Match report pending.

Result: WA 4 - NT 0

WA vs NSW - Sunday, July 23, 2006

Result: WA ? - NSW ?

WA vs VIC - Wednesday, July 26, 2006

Tuesday also being a Rest Day, the Ole 55s had just about forgotten how to play hockey when we came up against the Vics on Wednesday afternoon.

We knew we were in for a tussle, as the Vics had to win 2-0 to gain 2nd place and if (brave thought) we won 5-0, we would be 3rd.
The game was tough and tense throughout, with no quarter given.
Everyone played their best game and we held … and held…. And held. But no goal scored!

After an inspiring talk at halftime from Sandra and a great deal of singing and shouting from the stands, we went out in the midday heat to finish off the second half, with thoughts of triumph in our heads and feelings of agony in those ageing limbs.

Unfortunately, one of the many short corners finally resulted in a Victorian goal.
Or is that Victorious? Anyway, we lost 0-1.
However, we held the Vics back from getting 2nd place.

Now we play off NT for 4th/5th and if we win that one, it’s a rematch with the Vics for 3rd and 4th. “Build a Bonfire!”

Result: WA 0 - VIC 1

Playoff for 4th / 5th - Friday, July 28, 2006

Friday we had to play off against NT for 4th and 5th positions at 2.30pm in the afternoon.
We had beaten NT soundly in the first round and were perhaps a little too confident, especially after getting the first goal.
NT had changed their game and were sending long balls to their wings who were staying high.
Our short game was no defence against this and we lost confidence, ending up with a 2-2 draw.
Goals were by Pat and Margie, with an assist from Kerry.
Luckily for us, as we had finished higher on the ladder than the NT, this result meant we kept 4th position.

Result: WA 2 - NT 2

Playoff for 3rd / 4th - Saturday, July 29, 2006

The last day of the tournament and the Ole 55s were first off the bench at 8.30am, playing for 3rd and 4th positions against Victoria.
Our coach Sandra had given us a stern dressing down after the game against NT and encouraged us to produce the sort of game which we had played in the first round against Victoria.

It was the hottest day yet – even at that hour of the morning and the subs were on and off the field constantly.
The Vics were determined to beat us this time and put the pressure on early.
We managed to hold them out until just before halftime when they converted one of many short corners with a beautiful pass to the post and a quick flick behind the goalie.

In the second half, the legs were tiring – even Betty and Jane, whose stamina seemed endless – and finally another short corner hit Alene’s stick as she dropped to the ground and bounced over for a second goal.

We went down 2-0 to finish 4th overall.
None the less, it was a great game, with all team members playing their best hockey and was a good finish to our championship.

We consider the WA Ole 55s hold the record for the best singing (and certainly the loudest), the most songs and I’m sure no team enjoyed themselves more except perhaps the 35s – nothing makes you smile more than a gold medal!!

The Ole 55s settled down to watch the rest of the teams play their various games, with various levels of success but we were overjoyed, with the rest of the WA team, to see the Chicky Babes take off the big one, the Over 35s gold medal, for the first time ever.
Well done, Chicky Babes!
And well done to the 3 Australian team members selected, Rex and Vicki for the Over 35s and Tracey for the Over 40s.

Result: WA 0 - VIC 2
